Information on Our Response to COVID-19

The Central Food Network takes the health and safety of its volunteers, staff and people accessing services very seriously. We are mindful of the efforts being undertaken to stymie the spread of COVID-19 and our responsibility to aid in those efforts while also continuing to address food- and heat-insecurity in our community.  With concerns growing about COVID-19, we will provide regular updates on our actions to date and our response plan.

We are stocking our shelves to ensure that we can meet an expected increase in demand for our services over the coming weeks and months. We are acutely aware that many of the children in our community rely on food programs at school and daycare and households may experience interruptions or reductions in their employment earnings which will impact their ability to meet their basic needs including groceries, hydro and heat.

We will be here for you.

$11,300 Grant from OTF Saves the Day!

In early 2020, we were able to install a back up generator for our walk-in freezer and fridge at the Highlands East Food Hub. This was made possible by an $11,300 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation.

On November 16, 2020, this generator was put to the test when a wind storm knocked out power to Wilberforce for over 48 hours. The generator kicked in and saved thousands of dollars in perishable foods and frozen meals at our Wilberforce location!

What is the Central Food Network?

Picture
The Central Food Network (CFN) is a registered charity formed on the premise that when we work together, we can do more to help people. The CFN oversees the Highlands East Food Hub in Wilberforce (formally Wilberforce Food Bank), the Cardiff Community Food Bank and Heat Bank Haliburton County.

The Highlands East Food Hub allows us to acquire and store more food on behalf our food banks but also our community partners across the region. Our mission is to collaboratively and creatively source out food sources and share with others that need it. We also are working on new programming that assists people above and beyond food. Join us!

On January 6th 2016, we began operating from our new location at the Lloyd Watson Centre at 2249 Loop Road.

The new Highlands East Food Hub (operated by the newly formed Central Food Network) will:
  • Provides residents of our community who are food-insecure with access to healthy food in a manner that maintains dignity, aims to improve health, builds a sense of community.
  • Provide storage and a distribution point for monthly Good Food Boxes (a project run by the Rotary Club of Haliburton).
  • Provide a welcoming place where people who are struggling to make ends meet can access food and information on community resources.
  • Provide additional opportunities to receive and distribute fresh, locally grown produce through increased fridge and freezer storage capacity.
  • Partner with other regional food banks, community gardens, local businesses and other agencies in Haliburton County to share and trade surplus food donations to increase the variety of food available to all County residents.
  • Increased community economic activity through the use of local contractors, purchase of local goods (where possible) and fresh produce.
